There are 30 children in Ms. Reidy’s Senior Infants class this year. We are very lucky to be supported by our support teacher, Ms. Sammon, and our SNAs, Caroline and Lisa. Senior Infants is a happy, fun and busy classroom where a strong focus is placed on early literacy and numeracy. Children develop their reading skills through phonics, decodable readers, daily reading routines, picture-book read-alouds and interactive literacy activities on iPads. In Maths, learning is hands-on and active, with plenty of Maths Talk, problem-solving and practical experiences to help children explain their thinking and build confidence. We enjoy speaking Irish throughout the day and take pride in using our Gaeilge naturally in the classroom.
We are creative thinkers – our STEM boxes and STEM challenges turn us into engineers, architects and designers as we explore how things work, and we love carrying out simple science experiments. Play time is an important part of our day, giving children opportunities to build, role-play, create and learn together through imaginative play. Art is a highlight of our week, and we enjoy learning about and being inspired by artists such as Picasso, Georgia O’Keeffe, Andy Warhol and Van Gogh. On Wednesdays, we have music with Brian from Ceol na nÓg, which we really enjoy. A strong emphasis is placed on kindness and friendship, as we work together to ‘fill each other’s buckets’ and create a caring, welcoming classroom. We also love singing, dancing and learning new things each day.
